Ultrafast synthesis of phase pure Ti3SiC2 MAX phase by reactive Flash sintering
Advantages / Salient Technical Features
• Phase pure Ti3SiC2 MAX phase formed in very short
time of 10-15 sec Compared to that the conventional
high temperature synthesis method involves heating
at 1400 oC for 2 hours So, the present method of MAX
phase synthesis is fast and economical
Problem being addressed
• One of the limiting factors for large-scale and low-
cost manufacturing of MXenes is the cost and limited
availability of MAX phases.
• However, making good-quality MXene in large
quantities requires not just “a MAX”, but also a MAX
phase with appropriate properties optimized for
MXene synthesis.
• The novelty of the process in the present proposal
is very economical, easy to scale up process which
require simple setup for the synthesis of variety of
MAX materials at low external thermal energy input
(150- 400 oC) in a few seconds of reaction time storage, electromagnetic interference
compared to long heat treatment time at 1400 oC in shielding, electrolysis, biomedical, advanced
conventional Solid state high temperature synthesis composite structures, catalysis, optical,
technique. sensors, electronics, environment, water
• The invention also provides a rapid and cost-effective desalination, lubrication, dye absorption,
synthesis of various MAX phase materials using flash corrosion prevention, field-effect transistors
sintering technique with a very simple experimental etc.
setup.
